A Guide to Math Symbols in Unicode
Writing maths outside of a dedicated equation editor is awkward: the symbols are rarely on the keyboard, and images do not copy cleanly into chat or email. Unicode includes a deep collection of mathematical symbols you can paste as ordinary text, which stays selectable, searchable, and accessible.
Common operators and relations
These are the symbols people reach for most often. Search any of these names in Compose mode to grab the character:
- Multiplication and division: × (times), ÷ (division sign), · (middle dot).
- Relations: ≠ (not equal), ≤ (less-than or equal), ≥ (greater-than or equal), ≈ (almost equal).
- Plus-minus and infinity: ± (plus-minus), ∓ (minus-plus), ∞ (infinity).
- Roots and operators: √ (square root), ∑ (summation), ∏ (product), ∫ (integral).
Set theory and logic
For set and logic notation, Unicode covers the standard vocabulary: ∈ (element of), ∉ (not an element of), ⊂ and ⊆ (subset), ∪ (union), ∩ (intersection), ∅ (empty set), ∀ (for all), ∃ (there exists), ¬ (negation), ∧ (and), ∨ (or), ⇒ and ⇔ (implication and equivalence).
Fractions, superscripts, and subscripts
Unicode includes ready-made fractions such as ½, ⅓, ¼, and ¾, plus superscript and subscript digits for writing things like x² or H₂O inline. Search "superscript two" or "one half" to find them. These are single characters, so they survive copy-paste where typographic formatting would be lost.
Greek letters in mathematics
Greek letters appear throughout maths and science — π for pi, θ for angles, λ for eigenvalues, Σ for sums. Because they are so common in formulae, we cover them in detail in the dedicated Greek letters guide. You can also simply search their names ("pi", "theta", "lambda") in Compose mode.
